We do not own our units, but we are also not renters, so what is a housing co-operative? Basically, each resident was invited to become a Member after applying and being selected by a committee. Members must pay a membership share and monthly housing charges as well as commit to engaging in volunteer activities every month. We are not a low-income housing project and we are not a for-profit organization. All our Members decide to join our community and participate in it. For more information on housing cooperatives, see the Housing Cooperative Resources page.
We are dedicated to improving the quality of life in our community by promoting a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all Members. Our goal is to foster a strong sense of community which will allow Edmonds Place Co-op to continue to thrive well into the future.
Our Board of Directors is comprised of dedicated volunteers who are committed to serving the best interests of our community. They work to ensure that our co-op remains a great place to live. Six Board Members are elected for a term of two years each.
Edmonds Place Co-op was first envisioned in 1987 by a group of individuals who had been waiting for housing within Columbia Housing. They decided that they would develop their own housing co-op on Edmonds Street. They soon met with an architect, a building contractor, Columbia Housing and CMHC. They decided to go ahead with the project. This was June 24, 1987.
A week later, they began filling out paperwork and chose the name of the Co-op and its board of directors; in 1988, after several contracts, forms and documents were signed, they broke ground and their dream became reality.
As the project moved forwards people in the neighbourhood and surrounding city began to take notice of this new housing Co-op. Membership meetings allowed these community members to define and establish the rules and policies that the Co-op would continue to use for years to come. Members began to move in to the completed homes within Edmonds Place Housing Co-op on October 1, 1988.
With our buildings growing older like our community, we have taken the necessary steps to complete exterior siding, buildings envelope and roofing upgrades and replacements. Our work is not over yet; we are also continuing landscaping and interior renovations.
We encourage all our Members to stay active in the community by sharing information about local events, clubs, groups and even city politics. It is important for our Members to stay connected to the wider Edmonds community and the broader City of Burnaby to grow and maintain connections with our neighbours. See the Burnaby Community Resources page for more information.
